WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER FACE PEELS

Why do most people go for chemical peels, and even loved them? Peels address a lot of concerns which includes:

  • wrinkles and fine lines
  • sun damage
  • acne scars
  • hyperpigmentation
  • scars
  • melasma
  • uneven skin tone or redness

A chemical peel is a skin-resurfacing procedure used to improve the appearance of the skin anywhere on the body, particularly on the face, neck, hands, or chest. A chemical solution is applied to the skin that causes it to exfoliate and eventually peel off. The new skin is usually smoother and appears less wrinkled and brighter in appearance than the older skin. The new skin may be more sun sensitive and requires a higher level of care and protection to maintain its improved appearance. That’s why fall and winter are a great times for peels! There’s less sun exposure.

WHAT TYPE OF CHEMICAL PEEL SHOULD I GET?
According to Healthline, there are 3 different types of chemical peels that you can get, and includes superficial peels, medium peels, and deep peels. And I couldn’t agree more!

  1. Superficial Peel — This is also called “lunchtime peel”, this peel uses a mild acid to penetrate only the outer layer of the skin to gently exfoliate it. This type of peel is used to refresh the skin for a better overall appearance.
  2. Medium Peel — medium depth peel. this peel penetrates the skin more deeply than a superficial peel and may cause a second-degree burn of the skin, if not handled professionally! It improves aging and more damaged skin, as well as smooth rough skin, and treats some precancerous skin growths.
  3. Deep Peel — fully penetrates the middle layer of the skin to remove damaged skin cells; these peels often use phenol or trichloroacetic acid. This peel treats severe wrinkles, long-term sun damage, pronounced pigment changes, and lesions and growths on the skin. Deep peels are not done on darker skin types as bleaching of the skin occurs. The skin on the face where this peel is performed may always be lighter in color than the rest of the skin on the body. This is done by Dermatologists.

DO YOU HAVE TO DO ANYTHING SPECIAL BEFORE A CHEMICAL PEEL?
The answer is no, BUT a thorough consultation examining all aspects of your history is required. Note that peels of any depth can create permanent damage to the skin if not done properly.

You may think that peels are for all, no, it is not recommended for those individuals who:

  • Are pregnant or nursing
  • Have psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis, or Rosacea
  • Have taken Accutane within the last six months (minimum)
  • Have used Retin-a or other prescription skincare products within the last 48 hours

WHAT ARE THE RISKS AND POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS OF CHEMICAL PEEL?
Common side effects are temporary and include redness, dryness, stinging or burning, and slight swelling. With deep peels, you may permanently lose the ability to tan. Other like, allergic reactions, crusting, scaling, infections, increased sensitivity to sunlight can also occur.

PROPER SKINCARE AFTER A PEEL
Do these twice daily:

During recovery, follow post-op instructions faithfully. I will give you specific instructions for how often to wash your face and moisturize, and which products you should use to do so. Try to stay out of the sun until your skin has healed, and avoid using makeup or other cosmetics until your doctor gives you the go-ahead. You can use ice packs for 20 minutes at a time, or a cool fan, to help relieve discomfort at home.

For the products to use, you can see the list here.
