My skin gets a lot drier as it goes into winter. I might experience itchiness if I don’t even moisturize! It feels all crawly and my face needs a little bit of extra love too. Whether it’s cracking in the creases of the fingers and heels, flaky skin on faces, or sensitive skin flare-ups, everybody responds differently to the change in season.
Skin feels drier and more parched, like it’s constantly thirsty and needing refreshment during the winter season. A study also said that dry skin in the winter has been reported to involve scaling, defects in water-holding, and barrier functions. For your customers with eczema and other dry skin conditions winter can be particularly testing as the flare-ups tend to be more frequent.
We can’t change the weather, but we can take steps to help our skin win the winter battle.
Basic Rules of Skin Layering During Winter Season
1. Thinnest to Thickest
Simple—thinner products (often water-based) are unable to pass through the thicker products (often oil-based). So, the simple rule of skin layering is to apply products from the thinnest consistency to the thickest.
2. Avoid Products That Dries Your Skin Even More
Avoid alcohol-based toners, face wipes, or soaps, as alcohol is overly stripping and can make your sebaceous glands reactive preventing normal oil production in your skin and leads drying your skin even more.
Products that have hyaluronic acid or ceramides work wonders in colder temperatures as they have excellent moisture-locking properties for the skin. According to Insider, hyaluronic acid will draw in a ton of moisture, and ceramides help to lock it into the skin.
3. Be Smart With Retinol
Winters are an ideal time to use it and reduce the sun damage that your skin sustained during summers as retinol can sensitize your skin when you’re in the sun.
You can also do pairing of ingredients. This is where ingredients can be combined and they work together. It can also be an effective skin care layering. To tackle flakiness, you can apply a vitamin C product with a vitamin E infused sunblock, since they play off of each other and don’t affect efficacy when mixed.
4. Avoid Benzoyl peroxide or Salicylic acids
These useful agents are highly effective in reducing pigmentation and kills acne-causing bacteria. However, they should be avoided in winter skin layering as they are very drying.
Exfoliate once a week and always follow it with moisturizer.
Morning Routine
1. Cleanser
During cold months, opt for a cream-based cleanser. Try NeoGenesis’ thick gel-based consistency cleanser, which is available in four (4) sizes in store!
2. Toner or Mists
Hydration is just as important as moisturization in winter, so you must add toners or mists to your skincare regime. These products also help you balance the skin’s pH. Try NeoGenesis Moisturizing Mist. It provides cooling, hydrating relief from minor irritations and can be used for winter. Available in two (2) sizes!
3. Serum or oil
Use concentrated and non-comedogenic serums to get the needed moisture without clogging your pores. If you are looking for an all-in-one skin serum that improves the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and the overall tone and texture of the skin, try NeoGenesis’ Skin Serum. Available in Recovery and Booster Serums.
4. Moisturizer
Add moisturizer next, as it locks in all products that you have applied before and aids your skin in soaking them in. NeoGenesis Intensive Moisturizer is deeply hydrating. You can also try the Light Moisturizer for those who experience more humidity.
5. SPF
Use SPF 30 and apply it after a moisturizer. Just because the sun is not much of a show, it does not mean you do not need sunblock during the winter. Add the Brush on Block Broad Spectrum SPF 30 to your skincare routine. Sunscreen from BiOn also has an SPF35, you might as well check it here.
6. Lip balm
Cold weather can aggravate chapped lips, so make sure you use a thick layer of balm every few hours.
Night Routine
1. Double Cleanser
Start with a cream-based cleanser to get rid of pollutants and makeup. This should be followed by a lighter gel/water-based cleanser (or micellar water) that will remove any remaining impurities.
2. Active Ingredients
After cleansing, you can use high-powered products like retinol or bakuchiol, or glycolic toners.
I also offer Cosmedix Bakuchiol Complete Plant-Based Retinol Alternative Serum, you can directly message me as it is not available in store.
3. Moisturizer/Oil/Mask
Finally, end your day with a hydrating cream, oil or a luxurious sleeping mask. These products must have humectants.
