Did you already update your skincare routine?
Heads up, you need to transition it when the seasons change. Drier skin during the winter months shouldn’t require a complete change of products. Instead, it is best to listen to your skin and try to accommodate specific needs, by changing one or two products.
Follow your cleanser with an exfoliant to remove dead skin cells and give skin a natural glow. Go with a cleanser that calms, and soothes the skin. Also, look for a cleanser that does not affect your skin’s natural pH balance — try NeoGenesis Cleansers. We have four (4) sizes available.
Exfoliants also help to calm redness, a common concern at this time of year. And lastly, don’t forget to moisturize all day, every day.
According to a study, a moisturizer’s ability to prevent primary irritation has been recognized. Moisturizers alleviate skin dryness and primary irritation.
Remember that UV rays are harmful all year round, especially when reflected on snowy surfaces, so never leave home without applying an SPF of 30 or higher. Got a lot of SPF to choose from in the shop! We have the Brush On Block Mineral Sunscreen, available in 2 shades — which is by the way — ON SALE, and BiON Tinted Mineral Sunscreen SPF 35, available in 3 shades.
A holistic approach to skincare is important year-round, but I found it particularly in the Winter.
The Causes Of Dry Skin
There are various causes of dry skin. Here goes:
- Genetics. Your skin type, whether it’s dry, oily, combination, or normal is largely inherited. A study disclosed that when we have a leaky skin barrier it allows higher than normal water loss explaining the dry, scaly skin. If your skin barrier is not that great before winter, then it may be one of the reasons.
- Environmental factors. Weather, pollutants, heating or air-conditioning in our homes and workplaces, all affect our skin. According to the Washington Post, indoors, heating systems also dry out the air.
- Physical factors. Lack of exercise, a diet lacking proper nutrition, and certain medications can all negatively impact your skin.
- Stress. Chronic stress and anxiety can impact your daily choices (diet and exercise) and will therefore affect your skin.

Feeding Your Skin
What you eat shows up to your complexion. In fact, whatever is going on in your digestive system is mirrored in your skin. Sluggish metabolism made by an improper diet will make your skin dull and congested.
According to Jones, from Healthline, here are some food that might help.
- Fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, and herring, are excellent foods for healthy skin — rich sources of omega-3 fatty acids
- Avocados are high in beneficial fats and contain vitamins E and C, for healthy skin and protect your skin from sun damage.
- Sweet potatoes are an excellent source of beta carotene, which acts as a natural sunblock and may protect your skin from sun damage.
- Red or yellow bell peppers have plenty of beta carotene and vitamin C — both of which are important antioxidants for your skin.
